Sub umbra floreo

Belize is a Commonwealth kingdom, whose territory is located in Central America, east-southeast of Mexico and northeast of Guatemala. The country's capital is Belmopan and its motto is "Sub umbra floreo" ("I bloom in the shade"). The Mayan civilization occupied Belize as well as the nearby territories of Yucatan (Mexico) and Guatemala. One can visit the city of Xunantunich which flourished between 600 and 900 AD. Tourists can observe the canopy from the top of the pyramid of El Castillo and walk in the ruins of Lubaantun, whose Mayan temples were dynamited by the conquistadors in search of gold. Northern Belize consists mainly of flat and swampy coastal plains, with heavily forested areas. To the south is a low mountain range of the Maya Mountains, the highest point of which in Belize is Victoria Ridge at 1,160 m.
