Italy

Venice and Chioggia

Italy is a peninsula in Southern Europe located in the center of the Mediterranean basin. With an area of ??301,300 km2, it is 1,360 km long from north to south and covers 92% of the area of ??the Italian geographical region.
Open to the Adriatic Sea to the northeast, the Tyrrhenian Sea to the southwest, the Ionian Sea to the southeast and the Liguria Sea to the west-northwest, it includes many islands, the main ones being Sicily and Sardinia.
To the south, Italy is separated from Africa by the Strait of Sicily and to the north the Alps form a natural border with the rest of Europe.
In the south of Italy are the last active volcanoes in Europe (if we exclude Iceland), Vesuvius near Naples, Etna in Sicily and Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands.
The centre of the peninsula and the north of the country are occupied by mountain ranges, the Apennines and the inner face of the Alpine arc.
