Striking Footage of Waste Collectors

Reference : DO1309-HM010514

At the Duquesa landfill, on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, hundreds of waste pickers work daily amid the capital's garbage. Many are Haitian migrants—men and women—who search and sort through refuse looking for plastics, metals, cardboard, and items that can be resold. Working in extremely poor sanitary conditions, often without proper protective equipment, they are constantly exposed to decomposing waste, dust, fumes, and contaminated water. Behind these workers, several hundred families depend directly or indirectly on this informal waste recovery economy. For many, the landfill represents one of the few ways to earn a living and feed their families. Operated for over thirty years, Duquesa has become one of the largest open-air landfills in the Caribbean. Long criticized for its health and environmental impact, it is now undergoing a major rehabilitation program. In 2026, Dominican authorities launched its gradual technical closure, a process expected to span several years and raising urgent questions about the future of the hundreds of families dependent on its waste.
