Stunning Footage of Waste Collectors

Reference : DO1309-HM010512

At the Duquesa landfill, on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, hundreds of waste pickers work daily amid the capital's garbage. Many of them are Haitian migrants, men and women, who search and sort through trash looking for plastics, metals, cardboard, and items that can be resold. In extremely poor sanitary conditions, often without proper protective equipment, they are constantly exposed to decomposing waste, dust, fumes, and contaminated water. Behind these workers are several hundred families who depend directly or indirectly on this informal recycling economy. For many, the landfill represents one of the few ways to earn a living and feed their families. Exploited for over thirty years, Duquesa has become one of the largest open-air landfills in the Caribbean. Long criticized for its health and environmental consequences, it is now engaged in a major rehabilitation program. In 2026, Dominican authorities launched its gradual technical closure, a process that will extend over several years and now raises the question of the future for hundreds of families living off its waste.
