At the Duquesa landfill, on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, hundreds of waste pickers work daily amid the capital's refuse. Many of them are Haitian migrants, men and women, who search through and sort garbage looking for plastics, metals, cardboard, and items that can be resold. In extremely precarious sanitary conditions, often without proper protective equipment, they are constantly exposed to decomposing waste, dust, fumes, and contaminated water. Behind these workers are several hundred families who depend directly or indirectly on this informal waste recovery economy. For many, the landfill represents one of the few ways to earn a living and feed their families. Exploited for over thirty years, Duquesa has become one of the largest open-air landfills in the Caribbean. Long criticized for its health and environmental consequences, it is now undergoing a major rehabilitation program. In 2026, Dominican authorities launched its progressive technical closure, a process set to extend over several years and now raising questions about the future of hundreds of families dependent on its waste.
