Rare views of Norilsk, one of the world’s northernmost major cities, deep inside Arctic Siberia. Developed during the Soviet era around the Norillag Gulag, the city became a huge mining and metallurgical center, particularly for nickel and copper. Mines, factories, smokestacks and industrial installations dominate the landscape. In mid-spring, snow and ice still cover much of the region.
