Description
The nuclear power plants around us are a sword of Damocles over our heads. A new report by independent experts questions security at French and Belgian nuclear facilities and points at their vulnerability to outside attacks. These experts alert particularly to a certain type of facility at nuclear plants: the spent fuel storage pools. While these pools can contain the highest volume of radioactive matter in a nuclear plant, they are very poorly protected.
Dampierre-en-Burly power plant is established on the right shore of the Loire and counts four units of 900 megawatts each. It produces 24 billion Kw per year, which is 5% of the French electricity production.
Nuclear power is a major source of energy in France, with a share of 40% of energy consumption in 2015. Nuclear power is the largest source of electricity in the country, with a generation of 416.8 TWh, or 76.3% of the country's total production of 546 TWh, the highest percentage in the world.
Électricité de France (EDF) – the country's main electricity generation and distribution company – manages the country's 58 power reactors. EDF is substantially owned by the French Government, with around 85% shares in government hands.
