Riquewihr was one of the few towns in the area not to be badly damaged during World War II. The town is surrounded by Classified vineyards and its medieval fortifications. It is overlooked by a castle from the same period that is today a museum.
Unlike most other French wine regions, there is only one AOC for most wines made in the whole of Alsace.
